Trading that would Rally any Stock broker

You know one of my favorite Halloween memories while growing up was not the thrill of hording, gathering and trying to get the most candy before the strike of nine would ring.
It was rushing home and pouring all of my candy out on the floor. anxiously awaiting my parents to inspect my candy and then separating it into categories. Each of my siblings did this too. Why did we do this?? So, that we could bargain and trade with each other.

I swear we would give any broker on wall street a run for their money. I was ruthless. If it was something I had to have, like a druggie needing a fix, I would sweeten the deal so that I could not be denied. I'll trade you TWO star bursts and a chewy smart tart for your KING SIZE snicker bar!

I'll give you one milky way, two three musketeers and a tootsie pop for 3 Reese's and a 1000,000 bar! Deal??

I would always make my deal sound like it could not be passed up. Like I was the one sacrificing my goods to have that measly snicker bar.

I was ruthless and a shrew. My brother and sister would then offer out, "I'll trade you milk dud and a gum ball for your licorice? I didn't even care about the licorice. They could have it.

I would know my opponent. I knew my brother didn't care for nuts. I loved snickers. I would say eww, that has nuts in it, so does the babe ruth. I'll give you this for two of those. He would usually pass me three or four or even announce that I could have all of his snickers. I was devilishly elated and offered him all of the tootsie rolls and hard candy in my pile. He seemed happy enough, so it was a done deal. When there is 6yrs. difference between the oldest and the youngest. Quantity is better than quality when you are 6! But, when you are TEN yrs. old quality is superior.

I would know their weakness and know their favorite candy!

why do you think I asked each of you what your favorite candy was?? TRICKY, huh??
Now, I'm a big kid now and just by my own bags of candy. NO more beggin'. LOL
I truly loved growing up in my small town. I loved going trick or treating. I loved the rush and race against the clock. I loved taking my children trick or treating but this year is so much more cynical. The younger two have less amazement then even the older two. Dash, who is only eight may not even go trick or treating. He hasn't decided yet. He may want to watch Warrior play in his football game. If he chooses the football game. I told him I would buy him 3 BAGS of his favorite candy the next day. (HALF OFF can't beat that)

what are some of your favorite traditions or memories?

Whoa! the first commenter (maybe)--I'm not even sure what to say--kinda' like a dear caught in the headlights.
Love your memories!! I just pick out my favorite chocolate bars, and leave the rest for my kids usually.

Hope he goes to the game! Let us knwo how the game does go!

We also sorted the candy, and traded. Seems like we used to eat TV dinners before we could go out! Kelly would keep her candy until Easter....

We did the trading thing too. I was not as ruthless though. I just had a gun and said give me. That was plain and simple enough.

Memories are so slight for me. I do remember being a cute gypsie girl once. I got to wear a scarf that I loved of my moms. And I got to wear makeup. Ooooo..... I was stoked. We go homemade goodies when I was a kid. Not to much candy. Apples even. We lived in the country, so it was harder to get a huge stash.

Love this layout in here today. So cute Goose. Happy Halloween.

I would go home and sort my candy into piles too... and then help my siblings do the same. Being 6 years older than my next sibling, I was just able to take or sneak the candy I wanted from their bags ;) Devious I know. Sometimes I would feel bad and give them some of mine back, but they generally didn't notice because they had so much candy they could'nt get through it all anyways. Plus my dad was the master chocolate thief... If we left some chocolate with the rest of the candy, it was considered his. I always made sure the almond joys, babyruths, and mounds were left for him, and the rest of the chocolate was promptly eaten Halloween night or the day after :)

What a fun post. I love those old Halloween memories. I remember watching Disney's Icabod Crane every Halloween and I just wanted to be in Sleepy Hollow with all those characters. Well, now that I'm grown up and have moved to the east coast, I DO get to go to Sleepy Hollow every Halloween season! Yea!

AS I am reading this my boys are in the other room trading candy. (We went to a church party last night and have a bag full of candy already)

I loved going out by myself, with a map I had written up. I felt so free and independent. M

I entered your contest but forgot to mention my fave candy bar, and now reading this post I remembered that I forgot...oh you know!

TWIX. But it's changed over the years, used to be reeses, then whatchamacallit.

My kids totally sit on the floor with a big group of neighbors and dump out the loot, then they throw in the middle what they don't want, then they TAKE from the middle what they DO want.. (Then I throw out the crap NO ONE wants! ha!)

Happy Halloween!

We had a game last night, the same night as the schools halloween party. We divided and dropped off and arranged it so me and the hub could still watch him play. WE WON-off to playoffs now (yeah for playoffs, BOOOOO for football still ruling our lives!)

So great job on the candy trading but I'm concerned about your brother. Was he later diagnosed with some sort of disorder? Ya know, it ain't normal if someone don't like da snickers bar...just aint normal.

Hahahaha!! We ALWAYS did that too!!

That's a funny story! My sister and I are eleven years apart so I didn't have to share!

Have fun tonight and happy haunting!!

I loved having the costume parade at school! Too bad my kids will never get to do that :(

Ok- I don't know about you. But if your brother is 6 yrs younger then you. Wouldn't that of made you ummm maybe 12 years old instead of 10!!!! Still trying to deny your age. Come on your beautiful at your young age of 29...
I remember going trick or treating with my best friend. And I think we literally filled up a whole pillow case each. And now that I think about it. We did the same thing. But we both had older siblings & they stole a lot of mine!! Dang brothers...
I don't remember the candy too much & being able to eat it forever after.. My brothers must of took it all.
I loved Butter Fingers & Snickers & Tootsie rolls.. I gladly gave up anything with peanut butter.. Blah!

Seriously, how sad is the existence of an only child....have the same fun memory of trading.

But, we were then allowed to only eat ten pieces and then everything would end up in my mom's big green tupperware bowl anyway. What a bummer!

Love the "trading" story!

We did not get to go out much for Halloween when I was a kid. I always looked forward to the class parties at school!

Dash is a smart one he'll go to the game and get the candy he wants rather than the hard gummy candy the old lady down the street hands out every year (it must be part of her food storage, haha).

My dad would trick me outta candy every year and tell me there was a tear in the wrapper or a puncture that looked like a hypodermic needle. . . then he'd eat it after saying. . . let me eat it to check if it's bad. And I'd bite hook line and sinker every year!

Ah, a girl after my own heart! My bros and I did this too, only I was crazy for anything chocolate and especially the Resees (sp?) because nothing nothing was better than peanut butter with chocolate. And I could drive a hard bargain too. :) My poor little brothers. :)

We lived out in the country so we would go to 1 or 2 houses around our house and then head into grandmas neighborhood. She would make popcorn balls and we would get some snickers. She had 3 VERY LARGE HAIRY cats...so I would swap my pop corn ball with my younger sisblings so I would score on their candy bars and they would get my hair ball! Loved grandmas house!!

I just remember coming up with really fun costumes. We NEVER bought a costume from the store! I don't think I realized that till just now. We had a huge dress up box with lots of old clothes and random costume items. One year I was a jack in the box - my dad helped me decorate a big box, and I had my face painted like a clown and a rainbow wig.

We were vampires and hobos and hippies and farmers and dragons.....I'm going early tomorrow to find dress up stuff for my kids.

I loved Halloween too. I lived in a safe neighborhood as well. It was so fun to go run all over the block. I remember seeing my dad standing at the end of the driveway waiting for us to run to the next house. Does anyone remember those stupid store bought costumes with the plastic Mask?? How fun was that running around with that thing plastered to your face? I think I was a kitty or something and my brothers were probably some super hero. We use to go show grandma and grandpa our costumes. That was always fun. Trading candy was the best. Remember how cool you thought it was when someone gave you a candy bar. And what about the people who just bought the little smarties. Nobody ever wanted those. I love your Halloween blog. you are so good at this goose. I love coming to your site always something new.

Holy Cow I did that with my brother and sisters too!! We set up wherever on the floor, on a bed and began the "negotiations"!! We looked forward to it every year! SO FUN! LOL, thanks for reminding me of this memory!!

I love how smart you were at such a young age!! I would have been the naive one passing you all my candy! I loved coming home and sorting through my candy too, but I don't think my brother, sister, & I did much trading.

i do the exact same thing withn my kids candy..... i used to do it when i was little, too. {separate them into groups}. i love it. and yes.... trading was a BIG deal back in the day!!!!

i would give anything...ANYTHING for GUM back then. we were so poor and hardly ever {and i do mean EVER} got candy or gum.... and i knew gum lasted the LONGEST so i wanted it.... and i wanted it BAAAAD!!!!

and i love getting halloween candy half off..... seriously!!! it is the SAME candy just much cheaper!!!

Oh my gosh, my kids have been bartering all day with each other. It's so funny. We never did that when we were kids.

Score on the 1/2 off candy, if you can get it! I hope he goes to the game.

thank you thank you so much for putting up a link to my new shop. you're the best!

oh yeah... when we got home we would pour out our candy and put it in piles of the same kind... then the trading began! Fun memories!

That was the first thing my son did right after trick or treating... sat down with his friend and started trading candy.

We live in the absolute woods of Connecticut so we go to the next town and trick or treating. There are some street lights there.

Goose- I just want to say THANKS SO MUCH! Thanks for being a true friend to me & for helping me to see I was judging the teens that were trick or treating.. I wasn't being very Christ like & I see that now.
I really appreciate your thoughts & words on my post. You have so much wisdom & knowledge.
I truly appreciate you & your friendship. I just luvs ya!!!

our kids always trick or treated together so they always had the same candies in their buckets and no need to trade. sounds like you had a fun Halloween as a child. a smart trader, too :-)

I watched my daughter do the dame thing today with the neighbor kids-she had all her candy separated into categories. Her friends were looking at her best candy and seeing which ones they could trade her for. I don't remember doing that when I was young...in Alaska-we just happy to have candy! :)

I don't remember EVER trading or even SHARING w/my brothers. I would go home and eat until I passed out into a sugar coma. I hoarded my candy and it was usually gone w/in a week.(no self-control) To say I have a sweet tooth would be an understatement. Hmmmm guess I know where my son gets it from.

CoLiE-O said...

that is too funny. my dads birthday is on halloween so every year it was a big deal. we would have homemade chili before we went out, cake and ice cream (you can never have enough sugar?) then we would come home and watch "scary" movies with him.

fun memories. my kids enjoyed the trading that night. it was even more fun with cousins and friends. but i don't think they had your skills. i buy my own faves too now.

awesome bribe with the football game and the 1/2 off candy. what did dash decide?

Gosh I am pulling out the memory cards to check them out. I use to love all the wonderful parties my mom would take us to. We did not trick or treat door to door. She felt like it was not a safe thing to do. But she alway's took us to the schools halloween carnivals, ward party, trunk or treat. My dad liked to hand out a penny some times if you had a great costume. He would give a nickel. Little kids thought he was cool. Like you we would trade with each other. Most of the time. I would just give away all the stuff I did not want.

I am sorry to say that I do not have a good halloween memory! Our parents were older when they had us...to go trick-or-treating was not their idea of doing something fun with us. We did have a sister that was 9 years older...but I guess she didn't want to drag her twins sisters along! As we got older we would go with our friends, but I don't remember anything spooktacgular!! As my kids came along, I tried to make it fun for them...but my DH was not as keen on the fun!(and Halloween was supposedly his favorite holiday!!)

Souds like you knew how to barter and get a great deal!

Twin and I totally traded candy. And then again, there were lots of things we both liked. That was NO fun! LOL
