Yes, I went to Great Clips, Yes, I know the ramifications of going to this type of place. However, I have to say I have been to the top salons and have paid $80+ for a wash cut and style and still left looking like I had mange. I have paid $10 and been satisfied.
My deal with stylists is I can tell right away if it will be a good cut by first the shampoo, if you happen to be the washer and the cutter. My hair needs cutting all the way through. It is thick it is course and you have to really GET INTO THE HAIR! Many stylists act like they are afraid of such thickness. I promise you won't get lost in it! I'll come find you.
I have tried white stylists, black stlists, mexican, gay and hetero, high end and low end and everyone in between. When I find you, I am loyal to you. I also tip very well. I tip half of the charge fee no matter what it is! So don't rush the process.
I have found 4 or 5 good hair dressers, so I guess that averages to once every 10 years I get a good cut!
Once, I find my perfect scissor mate, they end up moving, getting fired or quitting and they don't leave a forwarding. When I found my most perfect stylist. I asked her all of these questions. She assured me she had been with the salon for 10 years and wasn't going anywhere. She was amazing. I didn't need some high meds to make and appointment. There was no trepidation with her. I went every 3 to 4 weeks. She was 30 years old, and almost 6 months after our sessions she had a stroke which left her paralyzed on one side. She was gone for 3 years recovering, and for 3 years I trimmed my own hair and fretted and it went awrye.
I feel like I am back in high school. With the wild bushy hair. But seriously, unless the 80's come back and the Hair Bands and spandex this do just won't do!

This is the result, of washing my hair, sleeping on it and waking up! There is no product in it, it is aux natural! It's uneven and it is very bushy because she cut one layer right at my middle cheek, where we all KNOW that is where every over sized woman wants added BULK! that is like me going to a seamstress and saying YES, I would love an oversized BOW placed right above my butt, and OHHHHh, please give me as many gathered pleats as you possibly could make right across my stomache and while your at it for added flair why don't you throw in some co-ordinating fabric right across the tops of my thighs. I love how that accentuates the girth of them. Please and thank you!....NOT!

It's not horrendous but it isn't the best cut! Perhaps in two weeks I will be singing this girls praises, but for now I'm staying out of the public eye! Maybe, I should try straightening it, but I'm afraid I will really HATE IT!! See straightening my hair is my only saving grace. Without that, I got NUTTIN'! When Mr. Incredible came in, he thought I CUT IT MYSELF!! He said the ends were uneven. Yeah, I knew that when I left but I didn't want any more inches taken off the bottom, so I left, with a smile!
**We agreed to have 5 inches cut. But, when the top layer was cut mid face it looked like a GROWN OUT MULLET!! I kid you not. I had to cut off another 3 inches so that it looked like a layer. Why didn't she just cut me a third layer in between the two? So, we had 8 and a half inches cut off. Good side:: no more split ends::

Once in the chair. I felt like I was strapped. I was immobilized. My feet wanted to run, my head said, "RUN", but my butt was gorilla glued to the chair. I looked at the other dressers and they looked like they all needed a good healthy cut, their dye job was very bad and I seriously wondered if this was where the graduates of the community beauty school were employed. I also did not find one certificate hanging, very odd.
It's not THAT bad... right?
I will probably try straightening it tonight. Mr. Incredible has just informed me we will be spending most of our day here. He has taken off the day. I'm sure it doesn't have anything to do with the fact that our son wants to go to Honduras or anything? It is flood the temple week. Do you think if I pray hard enough for my hair to grow back, it could happen?

*****NOTES TO MYSELF FOR MY NEXT HAIRCUT*****
-If the stylists look like they need a good cut, turn around.
-If the stylists look like their roots hadn't been touched in 6 months, TURN AROUND.
-If the stylists look like they would rather sit and do nothing, TURN AROUND
-If the stylists can't get your entire head wet, when getting shampood, LEAVE, pronto
-If the stylist only has a blow dryer and one comb, and one scissors,LEAVE she is not experienced enough for my hair
and the number 1 word of advice...
***Please don't get your hair cut on a desperate whim, don't be upset with your hair to the point you would chop it yourself, Go to an established salon. You will be much happier and love yourself and the ice cream parlor down the road won't know you by name!....(I'm just sayin')

Good Gracious Girl! Bless your sweet little heart! You can wrap a regular sized pony tail holder around my hair 4 times, so I can't even begin to wrap my mind around how much hair you have got! As much as you tip you oughta be able to get a great hair cut. I haven't been to get a "real" haircut since I was, well I guess about 12. I usually chop off a few inches every other year and then beg hubby to please straighten it up for me. I HATE paying for stuff like that.
I guess it is kind of like an auto mechanic. You really hope and pray that the first one you try will be "the one".
May you find the perfect hair dresser who will scrub your hair all the way down to your scalp and leave you looking like Farrah Fawcett! ; )
i dont think its all that bad sistah.
just put some curling styling stuff in your hair and i bet you will not even SEE the different layers going on. :)
that is MY advice..
and YES i totally agree on your tips for selecting a stylist!!! if their hair looks nappy, then i dont even want them to shampoo my hair!! i have had the WORST WORST luck with my hair. belieeeeve me. i know what you're going through. but you got lots of body & curl going on.. i think you can mask the layers that you dont like VERY EAASILY. :)
Doesn't look horrible, but those are some great tips for hair washing. Maybe you should train your husband how to trim your hair!I wish you could share some. Last time I had a bad haircut, I used a rosemary oil, and Nioxin hair shampoo and extra vitamins, It grew faster! Good luck.. and again it doesn't look horrible
I realize that my hair is different from yours, but it's kind of the same. My hair looks a LOT like yours when I wash and sleep on it. Frizzy and wavy and POOFY!! The product I've found that works the best for me is is Beyond the Zone "Noodle Head" curl activator. I spray a lot on when my hair's wet, then use the diffuser for about 2 minutes. Then I let it air dry. I LOVE it like that.
Also, I've started going to a Paul Mitchell school. Normally I'm not a fan of students working on my hair, but I think this is working for me. Paul Mitchell stylists are the teachers, so I feel more confident. Plus, it's cheaper than Great Clips. And honestly better. I go to the level 2 stylists that are close to graduation.
Anyway........good luck. I hope you can find a stylist you love, and one that will show you how great your hair can be!! (I sound so cheesy. But it's true!)
John Freida makes a great frizz product! I use it on my hair and it tames the beast!
I can't believe she cut your hair like that!! I am soooo sorry!!!! On the flip side...no dead ends:} Way to be positive!!
A friend of mine has really hard hair, similar to yours, and she has gotten the best cuts when the stylists cut it dry, then wash it, style it, and make any necessary touch-ups.
I know a good stylist is worth their weight in gold. I hate it when they quit on me or move.
Girl, oh my word, get over here, I am a pro at the poly hair type! :) doesn't look bad, but I would have loved to have seen the mullet going on lol... I completety agree, if your stylist doesn't got it going on, turn around! or pick another lol
You have enough hair for a whole family! Sorry you didn't get a great cut. I agree that it's hard to find just the right person. I still think you look great though!
Awe, I feel your frustration. I am still trying to figure out what to do with my thick, graying mess that is called hair. I am so like you when it comes to loyalty I just have not found some one I trust to cut mine yet.
Are you sure you got a hair cut? Don't worry except for the curl if i let my hair grow mine is like yours. Just letting it get to my shoulder my mom complains that it is so think the hair hides from her and she has to go around with scissors for days after I shower for hairs that finally fall free. When it is long it also is long a horses mane in a pony tail and gives me headaches. Doesn't yours give you headaches?
I got a haircut on a whim last month. I went to Super Cuts--the girl was 25. She was adorable. Her hair was adorable, styled cute, colored fantastically. I just wanted a trim. I told her no layers please. I ended up with layers everywhere and with my left side being an inch longer than my right side. I feel your pain.
Good thing my regular stylist finally came off of maternity leave. She was able to fix it and make it look decent.
You have a lot of hair! Holy Cow! Patience will definitely pay off in your case. I hate acting on desperation. It never turns out right.
Why is it sooo hard to find a good stylist??
(I hit enter too soon!)
I have hair issues too. Namely, some parts of my head are curly, some are straight, and the rest is just wave-y. Turns out this lack of consistency tends to be difficult for a lot of the people I've been to in the past.
And thanks for you tips!
OMG, you cut 8 inches off, wow! I totally feel you about finding the right hair stylist. I've been going to an established hair stylist since I was 17 years old until about 4 years ago when hubby was unemployed and then I did the unthinkable going to Great Clips. I feel guilty going to established hair salons because of the prices, but in the mean time I've been miserable about my hair and the color, so I guess what I'm saying is I need to go to a real hair salon soon!
hey Chrys
I also have really thick hair and in the last year it has become a curly friz mess unless i straighten it. Not sure why my hair changed but it has and i have always had the same fear as you. I always had the same hair dresser from baby to when i moved to charlotte, she was great but when i moved here i feared going to get my hair cut and i've done the super cuts. It was awful to walk out with uneven hair but i thought if i told her it'd only get worse.
I have found a hair salon in charlotte with a girl i love. She's young, you would never think looking at her that she is good but she is a perfectionist, always looking at your length etc. If you want her information i could give it to you. It's down on the corner of park and woodlawn.
Jennifer
OH man I feel for you! Finding a great stylist is a happy thing - when they leave for one reason or another it can be disaster. So sad what happened to your young stylist.
YOu should ask around your ward or at work (do you work now that you moved?) and get someone who has someone they love - word of mouth is the best.
Good luck with your hair. From the pictures it does not look bad to me and I would kill for some of the bulk in your hair but I know that when you yourself do not feel good about your hair it kind of "ruins the outfit"!
OH MY GOSH! There is nothing worse. It sucks though that you still look amazing right when you get out of bed... just saying.
I'm sure once you straighten it, it you will like it better. But, yes, I agree to your list there! And that is weird that there were no certificates in plain sight!!
hair is everything, isn't it? I hate it when I don't like my hair. I just had my color done..wasn't sure if I liked it. The gal did it a little darker..The first thing one of my sons says to me..Mom your hair is different..you look older.
uh huh!! that was the look I was going for..not
you are beautiful no matter what.. I would give anything to have more hair like you♥
First off - you look Great! You have lost weight. And what the hey it's 109' here & you have a sweat shirt on.. You crack me up. I kindof feel your pain with trying to find someone to do my girls hair. Allie had her hair relaxed in Feb. And honest the whole back of her head broke off or I should say fell out. It is like 2 inches long...
Also I think you are Beautiful & would love to have all your hair. My luck I'll be bald like my dad & brothers.... I have so much of my dads genes in me...
