Service Young Women's class activity

Our MiaMaid class chose to help a young sister who's husband is currently working out of town for months. She has 3 little adorable children! We love the Garcia Family. My MiaMaid girls are amazing! They weren't always amazing they were divided and different but through consistently doing activities that unify and easy going activities that break down barriers and gain trust and allows them opportunities to open up and have that trust that they won't be mocked or ridiculed gains trust. They still aren't exactly a like but they have the friendship to look past differences and find commonalities. They are amazing Young Women and will make amazing leaders one day. I have no doubt!!

Mosiah 2:36-37 36 And now, I say unto you, my brethren, that after ye have known and have been taught all these things, if ye should transgress and go contrary to that which has been spoken, that ye do withdraw yourselves from the Spirit of the Lord, that it may have no place in you to guide you in wisdom’s paths that ye may be blessed, prospered, and preserved—
37 I say unto you, that the man that doeth this, the same cometh out in open rebellion against God; therefore he listeth to obey the evil spirit, and becometh an enemy to all righteousness; therefore, the Lord has no place in him, for he dwelleth not in unholy temples.

Galatians 5:13 By love serve one another
Go through the building and genuinely give a person/child a true compliment and hug! Make one person smile and happier. (any one of these activities depending on time)

**We have just realized there is a mole among us! Our mission has been compromised and we must go to extreme measures to rectify this and stay the course. This will require getting down and being agile and limber!

Laser Maze (materials needed Red yarn to make an obstacle course where the girls have to crawl through in each spectrum on index cards it will be told if they need to stand, step over, etc. On the ground at the end is a mole skin. I didn't take a pic of this but I had red yarn strung throughout.

I wanted to add one more element of fun! Each of the girls had silly string. They could attack anyone they wanted. Because with service it always helps if you can have a joyful heart! They chose to attack our Bishop! (warning: You have to clean up the silly string)

The girls let me know that they had a fun evening! Liked that I planned this one and realized that service can be fun and not overbearing. Usually the class presidency plans all activities except I have asked to plan an activity if it falls on a 5th week. I passed out lip suckers. I found these at the dollar store.

Proverbs 16:24King James Version (KJV)

24 Pleasant (kind) words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

The Mr. and I got in on the lip action as well!

Wilbur Day - YW combined activity (Unity, self esteem, friendshipping, bullying)

The idea of our activity came from this site   Wilbur often feels discouraged and alone and on one particular rainy day he felt so friendless, dejected and hungry. He threw himself down in the manure and sobbed.

Have you ever had a Wilbur day? When you have felt alone or discouraged? But, Wilbur was rescued and he was rescued by Charlotte, whom he didn't like at first. He thought her to be cruel and blood thirsty. (don't be judgmental and close yourself off to someone before you know them)

We asked for anyone who wanted to share about having a Wilbur day and who are what was their Charlotte.

Over time he discovered a true friend. She worked at her friendship. She saved his life by spinning messages that led people to believe all these things about him. Even Wilbur began to believe these things about himself too. (We have such a powerful influence of good on others and how others perceive each other and themselves).

Not only do we all NEED a friend like Charlotte but we all can BE a friend like Charlotte.

CHALK BOARD ACTIVITY

I had a spider from Halloween that we hung above the chalkboard and Sweetheart led the discussion and the activity. We asked them to write QUALITIES OF A GOOD FRIEND
once we had many good qualities of a good friend. She noted that we all know what qualities make a good friend. But, we always don't ACT like a good friend. She also pointed out that many of these qualities that were listed are Christlike attributes.

Jesus Christ is our greatest example of a true friend. I found these quotes for Sweetheart to share:
Marvin J Ashton says, " A true friend accepts you as you are and leaves you better and independent.

Wilbur felt sad lonely and worthless that he gave up and plopped himself into a pile of manure. Sometimes, people feel the same way and throw themselves into a big pile of manure too. Only the manure can be things of the world. Such as peer pressure, drugs, looking for happiness in things that will make you sad later.

FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS

She then thought she would have everyone make friendship bracelets and as they start their bracelets they could each tie a few knots on every girls bracelet to REMIND us that although different the gospel ties us together. We should always have a friend in one another. Let's not put each other down but tie knots of friendships.

We did not have enough time to show Pres Uchtdorf's video on Bullying called STOP IT!

REFRESHMENTS

Watermelon and passed out seeds of friendships- MM's with a quote and how to be a good friend.

THOUGHTS:: Sweetheart realized the Beehives really carried the activity. The Mia maids and the laurels sat in the back of the class and just talked with each other. It is good to realize these things and hopefully, she will be a more active part of all activities. I thought it was a fun night! All activities can be tied to a gospel principle and should be brought out in each activity.  Great job K!!!

It was a fun idea that my daughter, Sweetheart put together!

Guitar- A touch of Beauty

I thought this posted months ago. But, I didn't see it.

Just like in my previous post this is Beauty's letter I wrote to her. The YW presidency had a lesson in church and asked all parents to choose and item from their child's bedroom that most described their child and why! I so loved writing this and I hope that they truly listened. I was writing it so they could better relate to her!

Dear Beauty,
I chose this guitar to represent you beacuse you are like the book, "The touch of the Master's hand" b Max Lucado. Instead of being a violin in the story we have a guitar. The gist of the violin is there is this old and worn out violin. Others have deemed it to have no worth. It goes up for auction and no one is even willing to bet a dollar on it, but then someone from the crowd picks the violin up and plays it beautifully. The sound is so pure and sweet. The crowd instantly begins bidding on the violin.
Others do not see the value and worth in the violin. However, the violin has not changed and has never doubted it's worth or potential.

You are like the violin. You know your worth and you know your potential. You are not easily swayed or broken. You are strong and beautiful. Living here in the Midwest has posed some new challenges for you. I think others over look your potential and your worth. They see something different and perhaps out of place. But, by the touch of the Master's hand beautiful music and worth can be realized.

At first glance, it may be just a guitar. But this guitar is tricky. It is housed in a guitar case. This case protects it and has 4 locks on the outside. Each of which have to be opened and touched. You are like the case. You have protectors that you have placed to guard yourself with. And they can only be unlocked by the individual. As each lock is released and barriers let down, you open the case to see a beautiful instrument. Awe, but it like you hasso much more to offer. For, that is just beauty on the outside.

Some may quickly pick this guitar up and strum it and plunk on it but will have no idea what they are doing and the sounds that evoke from it are sour and off key. Much like you, when someone approaches too soon, or unwelcomed, or steps into your personal space before unlocking all of those latches, you tend to have out of tune notes. However, we do have an electric tuner. So, when tweaked you can adjust and make changes. It is wise not to try to tune the guitar by an untrained ear. In many cases the strings will become too taught and break. I hope that you will always be in tune with the Master's plan for you. The scriptures can be your electric tuner. They will always keep you in perfect harmony and never pull you too thin.
You can create beautiful music and have great joy as others around you learn of you and from you. I know as you continue with your lessons with the guitar you will become a master at it. If you will keep your spirit tuned to our Savior, I know you can be the master of your destiny.

YW theme for 2011: 13th Article of Faith

My girls for YW are doing an art gallery for New Beginnings! It was cancelled due to the crazy snow and ice storms that we have been having!
I took them outside and snapped a few pictures of them and chose a quality that I thought they represented and why! They turned out really great, if I don't say so myself! I can't wait to get these framed and hang them in their rooms! I had so much fun; I think I may due all of the values!
If you don't know what the 13th article of faith it, it is one of the main points that we believe as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. You can read it here. OR you can read their little blurb.
I sure do love them! They are growing into two of the finest young women I have ever known!
